An Opening Note

Leave the Matches at Home

Anyone can light a match. Building the span takes years.

The whole idea

We build bridges. We don't burn them.

That is the idea behind The Guidewire. We build others, we don't tear them down.

01

The Stakes

If our organizations keep talking past each other, the residents and students inherit a fractured field.

I'm a resident. I don't have authority in this conversation - but I do have a front-row seat. And when the room quiets down, when the position statements get set aside, the leaders I listen to want the same things. Better outcomes for patients. A stronger future for podiatry.

The fight is almost always about how we get there, and who gets to lead the way. Ego gets in the way, the way it does in every human institution.

02

The Asymmetry

Bridge building is harder than bridge burning.

Burning

One inflammatory post. One moment of frustration, vented in public. The match is cheap. And the algorithm pays out in heat.

Building

Years of leaving ego and pride on the table. Showing up to conversations where you might walk away with nothing in return. No credit. Often unseen.

I've watched senior leaders do that quiet work without credit. I've also watched people - on every side - light matches, because heat travels faster than patience.

03

Mission Statement of The Guidewire

To empower the next generation of podiatrists to become the leaders this field will need to lead it forward.

It's not about me. It's about the residents and students - the young practitioners - who will inherit whatever we leave standing.

The real work of the profession - the politics, the closed rooms where the decisions actually get made - has always belonged to people with decades of experience and the relationships that come with it. For someone just starting out, that is a very high wall.

04

The Means

AI is how we lower that wall.

AI levels the playing field. It lowers the barriers to entry into rooms that used to take twenty years to walk into. A resident can read the evidence and walk into a nuanced political landscape prepared instead of deferential. That was not possible this early. Now it is.

None of this replaces the people who built the field. The point is to catch up fast enough to help carry what they started - and to do it out in the open, in the light.

05

The Bridges

We need to know which bridges were burned, so we can rebuild them. And which ones were never built at all.

Not only between professional organizations.

Between professional organizations
The same goals, drawn on different maps.
Between generations
The ones who built it, and the ones inheriting it.
Between individuals
Where the ego cools and the work starts.
Between us and our patients
The reason any of this matters at all.
Between us and our community
Past the clinic walls, where trust is earned.
Between us and other professions
Where scope hardens into turf, and turf into a wall.

The next generation will be empowered to do the right thing - in the light.

The way forward looks like leaving the matches at home and remembering that we are all working toward the same patient walking through the same clinic door.

So we leave the matches at home. And we get to work building.
